Lifestyle Coaching: Changing Your Path

Lifestyle is made up of the decisions you make on a daily basis, the routines you engage in, your habits, your social network, your occupation, your involvement in family, the influence of religion and spirituality, diet, exercise, and all of the other aspects I call, “Life Factors.”

What Exactly are the “Life Factors”?

Diet

  • Frequency—How often do you eat?
  • How much—Too many; too few calories?
  • Type of food—Healthy or not? Or calories, fats, protein

Exercise

  • Frequency—How often?
  • Duration—For how long each session?
  • Type—Cardio?, weights? sets? etc.
  • Intensity—How hard you’re working out.

Social Life and Relationships

  • Friends
  • Family
  • Romantic relationships
  • Co-Workers/occupational relationships
  • Daily navigating (e.g., shop clerks, bank tellers, supermarket employees, etc)

Play

  • Activities you enjoy—inside and outdoor
  • Hobbies
  • Attending events
  • The arts/creativity
  • Family involvement

Occupation

  • Working with others
  • Job stress
  • The nature of your position—what needs are and aren’t being satisfied
  • Meaning and purpose of the job.
  • What does productivity mean to you?

Home Life

  • Habits the surround where you live
  • Routine of the household
  • Pets
  • Children
  • Relatives

Finances

  • Managing finances
  • Reduction of outgoing costs
  • Maintaining happiness on a reduced budget
  • Increasing your funds—job changes?

Religion

  • The role of religion in your life?
  • Is there a social aspect to religion in your life?
  • How does religion affect what you think, feel, and do in your life?
  • Culture and religion
  • Your values and religion
  • Your family and religion

Spirituality/Existentialism

  • What gives you meaning and purpose in your life?
  • What gives you hope in life?
  • Does religion and spirituality mean the same thing to me?
  • What drives me to live in everyday life?
  • Who am I?  What is my identity? And what’s my role here in this world?
  • The role of positive life energy (or negative), the direction of the universe, and how people live in the universe.

Lifestyle coaching involves modifying factors (such as the above) to better your quality of life.  This may be as direct as changing exercise and diet, finding a better job, or as simple as discovering new friends; or it can be a more in-depth task such as exploring spirituality and creating more meaning and purpose in your life.

Common Thoughts That Surround “Spirituality”

  • What gives me meaning and purpose?
  • I don’t feel like same person anymore?
  • What used to make me happy isn’t enjoyable anymore.
  • I’ve lost my path in life.
  • What things do I have to look forward to?
  • After retirement I just don’t feel the same way.
